Buzzz… words!

Deployment, API, Delivery, Docker, GO, ML, Container, DL, Orchestration, DevOps, Scale, Stack, Kubernetes… and the list goes on and on. Why do we, programmers, feel such an uncontrollable need to use them so often?

Bees, Jani Ravas

So what do you know about Flying Programming? Did you hear about Cup, the new language that is mainly focused on DL Libraries? And what about the framework called BeeSli? Sounds familiar? If not - stay calm, you’re not too old and you’re not unfashionable. I just made all of them up.

Buzzwords. Oh how we love saying them. We are obsessed with dropping more and more of them in our small talk, meetings and interviews. Inventing more of them just sounds like the right thing to do.

Why do we like them so much? Buzzwords make us feel like we, the super programmers, have a secret language. Forget about the many secret languages which we already have, and the new ones we create every week. The programming languages. No, we need also a speakable language, JUST FOR US. Well, it makes sense. We are actually very special and should be proud about that.

But did you ever think what happens when a buzzword flies post and you don’t know it? It’s like… a spell. A friend of yours in Gryffindor just bewitched you and you don’t even know what it means! AHHHH!

Don’t worry. It’s OK, not every ‘add-one-more-file-to-your-project-and-call-it-a-weird-name’ trend should make you feel like you are missing out. If you heard such a word, say, more then four or five times- so just STAY CALM and GOOGLE IT. And if you don’t want to? ...Don’t. That is also totally fine. Just remember, when they ask you, tell them- ‘Oh that? Of course, I know it. And hate it. And most of all hate talking about it’.

Thank me later.
